Minimum Insurance Amounts for Commercial Trucks
Commercial trucks operating in Kentucky are required by federal law to carry minimum amounts of insurance. If you or a loved one is involved in an accident involving a commercial truck, that truck should carry no less than $750,000.00 insurance and perhaps more depending on the class of vehicle. The type of use, cargo, and weight of the commercial truck involved in a truck wreck also affects the amount of insurance required. A trucker operating without minimum insurance is not only breaking the law, but also putting the financial future of every other driver on the road at risk.
Federal law requires commercial trucks to carry the following amounts of insurance:
$750,000 - For-hire, non-hazardous property cargo trucks weighing more than 10,001 lbs.
$1,000,000 - For-hire and private, oil and hazardous waste cargo trucks weighing more than 10,001 lbs.
$5,000,000 - For-hire and private, certain classes of hazardous substance cargo trucks weighing more than 10,001 lbs.
$5,000,000 - For-hire and private, certain classes of hazardous substance cargo trucks less than 10,001 lbs.
