Juvenile Offenses.

In Kentucky, Juvenile Offenses are separated into two categories: public offenses and status offenses. A public offense occurs when a person under 18 violates a criminal statute. A status offense occurs when a person under 18 does something that is only illegal due to the person's age: truancy, runaway, beyond control, tobacco offenses.
The juvenile justice system is vastly different from the adult justice system in Kentucky. Court designated workers (CDWs) are responsible for processing juvenile complaints. Once a public offense or status offense reaches court, it is treated in a very different manner than an adult offense.
